Dear CLTA Member,
We are really in dangerous waters! AB 554 (Furutani - Long Beach) will be amended to make the state's graduation requirement either arts, World Languages OR Technical Education. Time is of the essence, as the hearning is scheduled for April 22. If the amendment passes, then it is certain that the Governor will sign it into law. All of this could occur within the next 2 to 3 weeks. Duarte Silva, Kathy Lynch, and I are going to try to sit down with the bill's author in Sacramento next week - but Kathy thinks we need to mobilize the troops - YOU! and demand that you visit your assemblyperson's local office and state your opposition to the bill. We can use any constituent, even if your representative is not on the Education Committee. But we especially need people (CLTA members) from the zip codes below - these are the zip codes in the author, Warren Furutani's district:

We also need members who live in the districts served by the members of the Assembly Education Committee. This list may seem long, but the important thing is to check the main cities and the zip codes. If your representative is on this list, PLEASE! PLEASE go to his / her local office and simply say that you are voicing your opposition to AB 554.
I cannot emphasize enough the magnitude of this threat to our discipline. This bill is misleading to both parents and their students who will find themselves lacking the minimum A to G requirements for university admission. And to quote Advocacy Chair Nicole Naditz, "Job search data clearly and repeatedly show that the same industries for which career-tech ed courses prepare students also need employees who are multilingual in numerous languages. Discouraging language study only makes students less employable in the very industries they are supposedly being prepared to enter! The Partnership for 21st Century Skills lists world languages as one of the subjects all students need if they are to be successful contributors and employees in our society. In a survey of business and industry leaders, they listed world languages as one of the skills they most need and can't fill. Removing language education from their curriculum is a disservice!"
Please visit your assembly representative and use these arguments.
And please let me know if you make a visit - we want to keep the pressure on.
