FLCSD 2008 Scholarship Recipients:

Kareli Arce, Vanessa Magos, and Christopher Zamora

FLCSD 2008 High School Scholarship winner: KARELI ARCE
Teacher: Jan Hedeline, West Hills High School

Kareli Arce was born in Chula Vista, but spent much of her early childhood commuting between Tijuana and San Diego. Kareli grew up speaking both Spanish and English, and, for her first few years of elementary school, she would cross the border to attend school in San Diego. She moved definitively to Santee when she was eleven years old, and began learning a third language, French, in her freshman year at West Hills High School. Kareli continued learning French throughout high school, and was president of the French Club this past year. She will be attending Virginia Technical University in the Fall, where she plans to study International Business with the hopes of opening up her own bilingual bookstore in the future.

FLCSD High School Student Scholarship winner: VANESSA MAGOS
Teacher: Isabel Hines, Escondido High School

Vanessa is an outstanding student and a leader at school. She is well respected by students and staff. She also volunteers as an interpreter when her church travels to an orphanage in Tijuana. She has been my student for three years: Spanish II, AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature. I encouraged her to skip Spanish III and to go directly to AP Language because she was far ahead of the rest of the students. She is not a native speaker, but a very hard worker and an outstanding scholar.

FLCSD Post-Secondary Scholarship winner: CHRISTOPHER ZAMORA
Teacher: Daniela Juri, Palomar Community College

I am double-majoring in Biochemistry and Linguistics. My eventual goal is to become a doctor and work at an international level for organizations such as Medécins Sans Frontières. I have knowledge in Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Japanese and would like to study Russian or Chinese in the near future. I will use the FLCSD scholarship to assist me in my plans to study abroad in Austria for the Winter semester in order to continue to improve my German. I will be either attending Alpen Adria Universität(Klagenfurt) or Karl Franzens Universität(Graz). Upon my return, I will continue my studies at Palomar College and also at Cal State San Marcos to obtain minors in French and German. In 2009 I plan to transfer to UCSD to complete my undergraduate studies and continue my preparation for the MCAT exam to attain admission into medical school.

FLCSD Rodenberg Teacher Scholarship Winner: Cecile Nedellec

I am delighted to be the recipient of the Rodenbeger Teacher Scholarship. I teach all levels of French at Serra High School. I am currently working on getting my National Board Certification. The scholarship assisted me in paying the fees for the certification. I will be talking about the scholarship and the National Board Certification at the fall conference in December 2008. Hopefully, at the fall conference of 2009 I will be able to tell all of you that I have been successful in becoming National Board Certified.

FLCSD is privileged to reward the achievements and in some small way to nurture the enormous potential of these scholarship winners.
