Wendy Garcia, Southwestern College

Wendy Garcia plans to transfer to SDSU to pursue three degrees: a BA in Criminal Justice and a BA/MA in Spanish with goals to help people in the Latino community who have experienced problems with alcoholism and drug addiction. Since childhood she has been fascinated trying to understand human behavior. An immigrant and first generation college student, Wendy uses public transportation to get to her job and her college classes. She has cared for her two younger siblings since she herself was twelve years old. Her Spanish professor, Dinorah Guadiana – Costa says, “Where does she get her fortitude? I know that in part, school is what keeps her going.” A bilingual herself, Wendy will tell you that she has been inspired by her excellent Spanish teachers at Southwestern, who have encouraged her to get her AA degree, to become passionate about Spanish language and literature, and to be a worthy role model of this language that she loves. She is proud to have taken first place in two of her classes. Concludes Professor Guadiana-Costa about Wendy, “She is a very deserving student who has demonstrated much personal strength throughout adversity, and an enormous motivation to learn and be successful”.

Kazumi Ito, Southwestern College

Kazumi Ito, an international student who speaks Japanese and English, is in love with Latin music, culture, and food, so she majors in Spanish! She is an enthusiastic salsa dancer with many Spanish-speaking friends and is passionate about learning languages. Kazumi would like to facilitate cross-cultural communication and understanding between her country and Spanish-speaking countries. One of her career goals is to work for a Japanese company as an interpreter in Latin America. country. Kazumi has lived in the United States for three years and every morning wakes up, turns on the TV, and changes to a Spanish channel to improve her listening skills. The FLCSD scholarship will help her continue her studies at SWC as she awaits her work permit. Her Spanish professor, Deana Alonso-Post, says, “Kazumi has many qualities that make her stand out from others. She is a very good student. She has the ability to learn languages and to understand difficult concepts with ease. She has excelled in all of my Spanish classes. Kazumi is a caring individual…a role model to other students…an asset to any profession she decides to go into.”
